How the 5 F’s of “Un-Ignorable” Content Can Supercharge Recruitment for Law Enforcement, Fire, and EMS

Whether you’re seeking dedicated police officers, fearless firefighters, or compassionate EMTs, first responder recruitment is challenging. Competition is fierce, and let’s be honest — the job is demanding. So, how do you make your recruitment campaigns stand out in a sea of “We’re Hiring!” posts?

Inspired by insights from Katelyn Bourgoin’s webinar on the “5 F’s of Un-Ignorable Content,” I started thinking: How can these ideas work for law enforcement, firefighter, and EMS recruitment strategies? I developed my own set of “F’s” to help departments — whether they’re volunteer fire departments, career EMS opportunities, or police agencies — connect with potential recruits.

These five pillars — Familiar, Fresh, Focused, Feel-Good, and Fearless — are key to attracting the next generation of first responders.

Let’s break them down and see how they can transform your public safety recruitment efforts!

1. Familiar — Speak Their Language

People connect with what they know. Your recruitment content should reflect your target audience’s culture, language, and experiences. Potential recruits want to see themselves in your posts.

Firefighters, try this: “Gear checks. Hose drills. Late-night runs fueled by adrenaline (and maybe a little coffee). If you know what we’re talking about, you know where you belong. Join us.”

This post taps into the familiar rhythms of fire service life. It’s not a generic call to action; it’s a nod to those who understand the grind. And it makes them feel like they’re already part of the team.

Law Enforcement Recruitment, think about this post: “You know that feeling when your radio crackles and it’s go time? If you thrive on making split-second decisions and keeping your community safe, we’re ready for you.”

Why it works: It’s relatable. It speaks to their experience and makes them feel seen, boosting engagement for your police department recruitment campaigns.

2. Fresh — Break the Mold

The same old “Serve Your Community” posts may not cut it anymore. Fresh content stands out because it surprises people or shows them something unexpected.

Check out how the Durham Fire Department in North Carolina nailed it with their “Day in the Life” video. Firefighter Sam McNeil takes viewers behind the scenes, showcasing moments you rarely see in typical firefighter recruitment campaigns. The video’s authenticity and creativity give potential recruits a genuine feel for the job — and that makes all the difference.

Why it works: Fresh, engaging content helps you reach recruits who might never see a job board. This is particularly useful for volunteer fire departments looking to improve community engagement for first responders.

3. Focused — One Clear Message

First responder recruitment posts often try to say everything at once. But people scroll fast, and attention spans are short. Each post should focus on one key message — camaraderie, training, or community impact.

Try this: “We need problem solvers. If you’re the kind of person who can stay calm under pressure and think on your feet, apply today.”

Why it works: A single, focused message helps potential recruits quickly understand what makes your department unique. This clarity is crucial for career EMS opportunities and police department recruitment campaigns.

4. Feel-Good — Highlight the Impact

Public safety jobs are tough, but they’re also deeply rewarding. Feel-good content shows the why behind the work and taps into people’s desire to make a difference.

Here’s an idea for your next post Share a photo or short video of a first responder making a real connection — like a firefighter helping a kid try on a helmet or an officer reuniting a lost dog with its owner.

Add the caption, “It’s not always about making headlines — it’s about those everyday moments that matter most. Want to make a real difference in your community? Join our team!”

Why it works: People want to know their work matters. When you highlight these genuine, feel-good moments, you show potential recruits that they can make an impact, big or small.

5. Fearless — Show the Real Story

Don’t sugarcoat it. Fearless content is honest about the challenges of the job. But it also shows the grit, camaraderie, and pride that comes with it.

Watch this Facebook video to hear why a former U.S. Marine chose to serve with the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office in Idaho to support and keep their community safe.

Why it works: Being real attracts the right people. Those who see the challenge and think, “I want that.” This honesty is powerful for law enforcement recruitment, and firefighting and EMS recruitment strategies

Putting It All Together

Ready to make your recruitment content un-ignorable? Use the 5 F’s to:

  • Connect with your audience through familiar language.
  • Keep it fresh with new ideas and platforms.
  • Stay focused on one message at a time.
  • Inspire with feel-good stories.
  • Be fearless and show the real side of the job.

Try this — take one of your recent recruitment posts and run it through the 5 F’s. Can you make it more familiar, fresh, focused, feel-good, or fearless?
